WMO-CIMSS Forecaster Training on Satellite Meteorology Data and Applications
On September 18-19, 2024, as part of the implementation of SDGs 6 and 13, the international training "WMO-CIMSS Forecaster Training on Satellite Meteorology Data and Applications" was held at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. The event brought together young scientists and students from Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, the Republic of Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
The goal of the training was to provide participants with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in using satellite data for meteorology. Participants gained hands-on experience working with real satellite data through laboratory exercises. The training was led by high-level experts: Tim Wagner, a researcher from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Natalia Donokhova, Head of the Space Systems Department at the World Meteorological Organization. This international training marked an important step in fostering new connections and sharing experiences in Earth sciences, promoting stronger collaboration between countries in the region.
On the first day, participants delved into the theoretical aspects of satellite meteorology, studying the electromagnetic spectrum, visible and microwave channels, as well as the operation of geostationary and polar satellites. The practical session included the use of the SSEC RealEarth platform to analyze clouds and precipitation. The second day was devoted to relevant topics such as hazardous phenomena in hydrometeorology and floods.
At the conclusion of the training, participants expressed their gratitude to the organizers for the opportunity to gain advanced knowledge and exchange experience in satellite meteorology. All participants received certificates confirming their participation, marking an important step in their professional development and careers in meteorology.
