International Round Table: "Genetics: History, Modernity, and Future"
On November 29, 2024, the International Round Table, dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics and the 90th anniversary of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU), took place. The event brought together leading scientists, professors, students, and representatives of international scientific organizations.
Participants included the staff of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, the Institute of Genetics and Physiology (Almaty), the Institute of Biology and Biotechnology of Plants (Almaty), the Kazakh Research Institute of Livestock and Fodder Production (Almaty), the Gustave Roussy Institute (Paris, France), and the N.I. Vavilov Institute of General Genetics (Moscow, Russia).
The primary objective of the Round Table was to discuss the historical development, current advancements, and prospects in genetics and molecular biology while promoting international scientific collaboration and the popularization of science.
Key topics addressed during the Round Table included the history of genetics and molecular biology, contemporary achievements in these fields, and their potential applications. Presentations highlighted pressing issues such as using bioinformatics tools for genomic data analysis, the impact of pesticides on the genetic status of populations, and aberrant DNA excision repair pathways in cases of complex DNA damage. Particular attention was given to fostering international research partnerships and facilitating the exchange of expertise among scientists. As a result, participants agreed to develop collaborative initiatives further.
The Round Table discussions also aligned with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 3 "Good Health and Well-being", SDG 4 "Quality Education", and SDG 17 "Partnerships for the Goals".
Participants emphasized the significance of genetics and molecular biology research for advancing scientific knowledge and improving societal well-being.
