Educational hours on the theme “Clean water as a basis for sustainable development”

On November 28-29, 2024, as part of the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the al-Farabi Kazakh National University, were held educational hours for undergraduates on the theme «Clean water as a basis for sustainable development», dedicated to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) «Clean Water and Sanitation» (Goal #6) and «Partnerships for the Goals» (Goal #17).
These important events were organized under the guidance of B. Imanbekova, Associate Professor of Pedagogy and Educational Management Chair, as well as A. Temirzhanova and R. Yrysbek, 1st year doctoral students in «Hydrology» specialty. Educational hours were held at the Institute of Geography and Water Security and Kazakh National Agrarian Research University. Master students of the 1st and 2nd courses of the specialty «Hydrology» of KazNU, as well as employees of the mentioned institutions - a total of 30 people - took active part in the event.The participants of the event were greeted with an opening speech on the assigned topic by the Head of the Hydrochemistry and Ecological Toxicology Laboratory, PhD, Associate Professor Madibekov Azamat Sansyzbaevich, and PhD, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Water Resources and melioration, KazNARU, Onglasyn Ulzhan Kuanyshbekkyzy. They presented the main goals and objectives of the session, emphasizing the importance of the discussed topic for the professional and personal development of the participants. In their speeches, they also highlighted the importance of applying the acquired knowledge in practice and stressed the significance of research in the field related to the topic of the session.
During the educational hours, master students got acquainted with the main directions of work of the Institute of Geography and Water Security and the Water Hub - an international research center located at the Kazakh National Agrarian Research University, as well as with advanced innovative technologies of water treatment. They discussed the importance of search and transfer of new knowledge, its adaptation to local conditions, and the need to mobilize efforts of all water scientists in Kazakhstan and Central Asia for effective water resources management.
In addition, future specialists actively discussed with practical experts the most important problems of water resources management in Kazakhstan, as well as ways to use their professional knowledge in hydrology to solve them. The educational hours allowed master students to realize the value of their profession in the context of the UN Program on Sustainable Development and feel proud of their specialty
