PASSING ON HISTORY ON THE JAPANESE ISLANDS: participation of a KazNU scientist in the international seminar “Voices of Diaspora: Experiences of Ethnic Korean Minorities in Kazakhstan, Russia, and Japan” at Ritsumeikan University (Japan)
Associate Professor, Candidate of Historical Sciences Natalia Borisovna participated as a speaker in the International Scientific Seminar of the project "Building a multicultural and multiethnic society: the ethnic Korean community in the post-national trajectory of Kazakhstan". The seminar was organized by the College of International Relations of Ritsumeikan University (Kyoto, Japan). The seminar was attended by professors from Japanese universities in order to provide research results on ethnic minorities in Japan and ethnic Koreans in Central Asia. The seminar was attended by professors from Japan, Germany, Great Britain, the USA, and Bulgaria. The first speaker was Associate Professor Em N.B., she presented the report "Experiences, and Social Dynamics of Ethnic Koreans in Kazakhstan" (The experience and social dynamics of ethnic Koreans in Kazakhstan). The paper presents the results of a study of the oral history of ethnic Koreans of Kazakhstan based on interviews with representatives of the second and third generations. The speaker demonstrated the peculiarities of the development of the Korean ethnic community in multinational Kazakhstan and the specifics of the formation of civic identity. Other reports were presented by Igor Saveliev, Nagoya University (Japan) "Rethinking identity in diasporic spaces: Meetings of Central Asian and Sakhalin Koreans in South Korea and Russia", as well as Dr. Jackie J. Kim-Wachutka, Ritsumeikan University (Japan) on the topic "Talking about "Zainichi" — challenging erasure: on the threshold of a place and the memory environment of Diasporic Koreans in Japan" In addition, the Dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies met with Professor Daisuke Kamei, Director of the Institute of Humanities, Humanities and Social Sciences at Ritsumeikan University, to discuss current and future cooperation. A Memorandum of Cooperation has been prepared between the universities, which is currently under consideration at the al-Farabi Kazakh National University.
