A trip to China: between education and cultur

My name is Sultan, and I am a 4th-year student at the Department of Chinese Studies, Faculty of Oriental Studies. I would like to share my experience of an academic trip to Wuhan, China.
Studying abroad is often described as a life-changing experience, and my six-month journey from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) to South-Central Minzu University (SCMZU) in Wuhan is proof of that. This opportunity not only expanded my academic perspective but also allowed me to immerse myself in a new culture, make lifelong friends, and grow both personally and professionally.
My decision to study at SCMZU was driven by my passion for gaining a deeper understanding of Chinese language and culture. Wuhan is a vibrant city in central China, known for its rich history, diverse population, and prestigious educational institutions. SCMZU, in particular, stands out for its emphasis on multiculturalism and its welcoming atmosphere for international students. As a student from Kazakhstan, I wanted to experience firsthand the unique blend of tradition and modernity that Wuhan offers.
At SCMZU, I enrolled in a program that complemented my studies at KazNU. Although the courses were challenging, they were highly rewarding. I especially appreciated the interdisciplinary approach to learning. The professors were knowledgeable and supportive, encouraging students to think critically and engage in discussions. One of the highlights was participating in group projects with both Chinese and international students, which gave me new perspectives and improved my teamwork skills.
The university also offered language courses that helped me enhance my proficiency in Chinese. Although I initially faced language barriers, the kind and patient instructors made the learning process enjoyable. By the end of my stay, I felt much more confident in speaking and even made local friends who helped me practice the language.
Living in Wuhan was an adventure in itself. The city’s bustling streets, delicious food, and historical landmarks left a deep impression on me. I made it a point to visit famous sites such as the Yellow Crane Tower, East Lake, and the Hubei Provincial Museum. Each visit deepened my appreciation for Chinese history and culture.
One of the most memorable aspects of my time in Wuhan was the food. From reganmian (hot dry noodles) to spicy crayfish, the local cuisine was truly a delightful gastronomic journey. I also enjoyed attending traditional festivals and events, where I learned about Chinese customs firsthand.
Of course, studying abroad came with its challenges. Adapting to a new environment, dealing with homesickness, and overcoming cultural differences were not always easy. However, these experiences taught me resilience and adaptability. I learned to embrace the unknown and approach difficulties with an open mind.
The support of the international student community at SCMZU was invaluable. We shared experiences, celebrated each other’s successes, and provided support during difficult times. This sense of camaraderie made my time in Wuhan even more meaningful.
Looking back, my six months at South-Central Minzu University were truly transformative. I returned to Kazakhstan with a wealth of knowledge, unforgettable memories, and a newfound appreciation for cultural diversity. This experience not only enhanced my academic and professional skills but also made me a more confident and globally minded individual.
Studying abroad in Wuhan was not just about academics; it was a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. I am grateful to have been part of such a dynamic and welcoming community, and I will always cherish the connections I made during my time in China.
