On February 12, 2025, the Faculty of Physics and Technology at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted the international roundtable "Women in Science", dedicated to the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The event was held in a hybrid format (offline/online), allowing for broader geographic participation. Representatives from various cities and countries joined the discussion. During the meeting, key issues related to the role of women in science and society were discussed. Participants addressed topics such as the emancipation movement of the 20th century, the contributions of female scientists to global science, and notable figures in Kazakhstani science. Special attention was given to the challenges faced by women pursuing a scientific career. One of the invited speakers, Darya Puzikova, a senior researcher at the Laboratory of Catalysis and Electrochemistry at the D.V. Sokolsky Institute, provided a detailed insight into the difficulties women scientists encounter and ways to overcome them.
During the discussion, experts highlighted several key areas to support women in science:
- combating gender stereotypes;
- creating conditions for balancing career and family life;
- ensuring equal opportunities for professional growth and access to resources.
As part of the event, a ceremonial award ceremony was held to recognize women scientists of the Faculty of Physics and Technology for their outstanding scientific achievements. The dean of the faculty, who had previously received a letter of appreciation from the rector, presented honorary certificates and letters of gratitude to Symbat Bolegenova, Kunduz Turekhanova, and Olga Fedorenko for their contributions to science.
The event was held under the auspices of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 5, aimed at achieving gender equality.
