The Influence of Translation on the Perception of Environmental Issues

On March 13, 2025, within the framework of pedagogical practice, the first-year master's degree student of Translation Studies major Yenlik Karabaeva conducted a curatorial hour on the topic: "The Influence of Translation on the Perception of Environmental Issues" for the first-year students majoring in "Translation Studies" within the framework of SDG 15 "Life on Land." The senior lecturer of the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Studies, T. E. Pshenina was present at the event.
During the event, the conservation of terrestrial ecosystems was noted to play a crucial role to maintain the planet's ecological balance. The issues such as deforestation, desertification, biodiversity loss, and measures to protect natural resources were discussed. A main focus was made on the linguistic aspects of environmental topics: the analysis of ecological terminology and vocabulary, as well as the peculiarities of translating environmental texts in various types of translation – scientific-popular, literary, and media translation. The students considered the specifics of conveying environmental information in each of these translation types. They were focused on translation units such as lexical, phraseological, and syntactic structures used in text adaptation. The examples of translating key terms, metaphorical expressions, and culturally specific concepts that may pose challenges in interpretation and meaning transfer were examined. The role of translation in shaping the perception of environmental issues and the importance of accurately conveying ecological information in translation were discussed.
The students actively participated in discussions, shared their opinions, and exchanged knowledge on the ways to preserve terrestrial ecosystems. They were given the opportunity to discuss the topic and express their views. The event was conducted in Russian.
