SDG-4: Students Watched the Performance "Karagoz"

24 february, 2025

On February 21, students from the Faculty of Philology of our university attended the Gabit Musrepov Youth Theatre, where they watched the performance "Karagoz."

The play "Karagoz" by M. Auezov, written shortly after "Enlik-Kebek" and evoking a Hamlet-like storyline, gained special attention from the audience. The play was published in 1926 and staged in Semey the same year. It is a complex psychological drama and a clear tragedy. Its artistic elements can be freely compared with the best examples of world dramaturgy. The play depicts the fate of young people who become victims of old customs and are unable to attain freedom.

At the beginning of the play, Narsha and his friends appear on stage. Karagoz has doubts about whether there is anyone she likes in her village. In the love between Karagoz and Syrim, there is a significant obstacle — their familial roots do not reach seven generations, and according to tradition, they cannot be united. Furthermore, Karagoz is engaged to Narsha, a well-known and respected young man from another tribe. Narsha is deeply upset that he was unable to win Karagoz's heart. Despite Karagoz and Narsha getting married, her thoughts remain with Syrim. Seeing his wife unable to be with her true love, Narsha, who was once seen as the best man in the village, is consumed with sorrow. The author portrays him as a character rarely encountered in literary works. Syrim and Karagoz, with no other "crimes" but mutual love, are subjected to public shame and dishonor. One of them goes mad and dies, while the other suffers through a troubled life.

At the end of the evening, the students shared their impressions of the performance and took a commemorative photo.
