27 march, 2025

At Al-Farabi KazNU, the international scientific and practical conference "Margulan Readings – 2025" has commenced. The event is organized by the A.Kh. Margulan Institute of Archaeology, the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the Science Committee of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan in collaboration with the university’s Faculty of History.

Held since 1989, the "Margulan Readings" is one of the oldest national scientific conferences and serves as a traditional platform for discussing current issues and future prospects in archaeological science.

The event brought together leading experts, as well as domestic and international scholars from France, Germany, Korea, the USA, Turkey, Russia, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan.

The conference was opened by the General Director of the A.Kh. Margulan Institute of Archaeology, Candidate of Historical Sciences Akan Ongaruly, who read a congratulatory letter from the Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Sayasat Nurbek. "Currently, scientists face the challenge of bringing archaeological research to a new level. In this regard, several important projects are being implemented, including the construction of a new complex for the A.Kh. Margulan Institute of Archaeology and the creation of a National Repository for the preservation and study of the country's archaeological findings. These projects will undoubtedly become significant steps in exploring the history and culture of our country's indigenous peoples. Within the walls of the Mazhilis, issues such as improving archaeology-related legislation, regulating licensing, banning illegal excavations, and conducting historical and cultural assessments are being discussed. At the same time, the 'Margulan Readings' is not just an exchange of opinions but a unifying event that will allow archaeology and historical science to reach a new level. Continue your successful and fruitful work in the deep study of our country's cultural heritage", - the letter stated. During the event, participants also presented reports on pressing issues in Kazakhstan's archaeological science, assessing its current state and future prospects.

The conference then continued with sectional meetings focusing on various areas, including ancient archaeology, the Early Iron Age, the Middle Ages, interdisciplinary research in archaeology, and other related topics.

As part of the conference, two round tables were held, the topics of which are directly related to the instructions of the Head of State, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, announced at the meetings of the National Kurultai in the cities of Atyrau and Turkestan: "Discussion of the Concept for the Development of Archaeological Science in Kazakhstan" and "Historical and Cultural Heritage of Kazakhstan in the Context of Modern Challenges"
