Training Hub for Simultaneous Interpreters: Cooperation with the PRC

One of the leading universities in the People’s Republic of China for training professional simultaneous interpreters is the Graduate Institute of Interpretation and Translation (GIIT) at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU). It was within the walls of this prestigious institution that the first Chinese-language simultaneous interpreters for the United Nations were trained. Over the years, SISU and its GIIT have accumulated invaluable experience in this field.
It was a great honor for me that Professor Dr. Zhang Ailing, Dean of the Graduate Institute of Interpretation and Translation at SISU, kindly agreed to be my foreign academic advisor and invited me to undergo an international research internship at GIIT from November 23 to December 22, 2024.
During the internship, all objectives and tasks outlined in the plan were fully achieved: I gathered and analyzed missing Chinese-language materials using GIIT’s resources; I also collected essential materials for my dissertation in the library. In addition to consultations and discussions with my advisor, I was given the opportunity to attend lectures by GIIT faculty and participate in closed courses on simultaneous interpretation training, which utilized the latest interpretation equipment.
Overall, this internship provided highly valuable experience, contributing not only to the development of my dissertation plan, but also to establishing academic contacts with international scholars and learning specialized methodologies used in interpreter training.
