On April 15, 2025, young researchers from the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University held a scientific seminar at School-Gymnasium No. 201 in Alatau District, Almaty, titled “The Role of Chemistry in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”.
The aim of the seminar was to introduce high school students to the UN’s SDGs and highlight the critical role of chemistry in addressing global challenges in ecology, energy, and sustainable resource management.
The event was organized by faculty lecturer, Candidate of Chemical Sciences Mayra Kasenovna Kalabayeva, who emphasized the relevance of scientific thinking and sustainable approaches in modern chemistry.
Young scientists presented the following topics:
▪️ Zhandos Orаzov – “Water purification methods: disinfection, filtration, sorption” (SDG 6)
▪️ Erasyl Zholdas – “Alternative energy sources and catalysis” (SDG 7, 9)
▪️ Kairat Kenes – “Chemical waste processing and eco-friendly technologies” (SDG 12, 13, 14)
Students actively participated in the discussion, asking insightful questions about rare earth elements, energy efficiency, green chemistry, and sustainable production technologies.
The seminar also provided career guidance to future graduates, including detailed information about the faculty, academic programs, laboratory resources, and admission procedures.
At the end of the event, educational books by Professor Kuramangali Bekishev – “Chemistry Problems,” “Redox Reactions,” and “Organic Chemistry” – personally signed and officially sealed by the faculty, were donated to the school’s chemistry classroom library, named in honor of Rabiga Kasenovna Kalabayeva.
Conclusion:
Chemistry is not just a subject – it is the foundation of a sustainable future.
Such events inspire and cultivate the next generation of scientists.
