The Republican Research Center for the Study of Traditional Civilizations of Central Asia was opened at the Faculty of History of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, as part of the "People in the Stream of History" research program initiated by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. From 2013 to 2021, the Center's director was Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor T.O. Omarbekov, From 2021 to the present, the director is Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor G.B. Khabizhanova.
The Center organized scientific research in five scientific areas: 1. Methodological problems of studying traditional civilizations of Central Asia; 2. History of the steppe empires of nomads; 3. Ethnogenesis of the Kazakh people; 4. History of the relationship of the nomads of Central Asia with neighboring, non-nomadic peoples; 5. Social and ethno-cultural structure of traditional societies of Dasht-i Kipchak.

AP05135345 "Mythological universals and spiritual practices in the reconstruction of the ethnohistorical picture of the world of the Turkic peoples" (project director M.S. Nogaybayeva), 2021-2023 AP09261323 "Sacredness of symbols and attributes in the ethnic culture of the nomads of Central Asia" (project director T.O. Omarbekov / M.S. Nogaybayeva), 2024-2026 AP23488984 "Medieval toponymy in the aspect of the formation of the ethnic territory of the Kazakh people".
As part of the implementation of projects, the Center published the following scientific works: “History of the Nomadic Civilization of Central Asia” from 6 volumes (2015-2020). “Dictionary of Nomads of Central Asia” (2020), a textbook for university students “History of Kazakhstan” (“Kazakh Еli”) in 4 books (in Russian, Kazakh and English) (2018-2020), approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, monograph “The Turkic-Slavic World as a Model of Ethnohistorical and Sociocultural Dialogue” (2017), monograph “The Religious and Mythological Character of the World of the Turkic Peoples at the Turn of the Centuries” (2020), collective monograph ““Ethno-geosymbolism of the Nomadic Culture of the Peoples of Central Asia” (2023).
