Farabi University

Research activities

Research activity in the al-Farabi Kazakh National University aimed at expanding and completion knowledge about objectively existing laws of phenomena and processes occurring in the social and natural environment.

In the al-Farabi Kazakh National University research activities include the research projects, commercial contracts and implementation of research results in the form of publications and reports on international and regional educational and scientific markets.

One of the most important areas of research activities is research work of students. This is a powerful factor in improving the quality of training of specialists with higher education who can creatively use achievements of scientific and technological progress in the practice.

Revenue from interdisciplinary research at the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University amounts to approximately 11.3 billion tenge, with the majority of this funding coming from projects implemented at the intersection of various scientific fields, including biomedicine and neuroscience, artificial intelligence and digital technologies, ecology and sustainable development, geographic information systems and climate research, as well as agro- and biotechnology; the interdisciplinary nature of this research is evident in the integration of methods and approaches from different fields of knowledge, which enables the resolution of complex scientific and applied problems of high socio-economic significance, and, overall, demonstrates that a significant portion of the university’s research revenue is generated precisely through projects focused on integrating scientific disciplines and developing cutting-edge technological fields.

Al-Farabi Kazakh National University has established a system of indicators that reflect the success of interdisciplinary research within the relevant disciplines; key indicators include the amount of funding attracted for projects at the intersection of sciences, the number and share of interdisciplinary projects in the overall research portfolio, publication activity in highly ranked international journals (Scopus, Web of Science) with interdisciplinary themes, researchers’ citation rates and Hirsch indexes, the number of patents obtained and implemented developments, participation in international consortia and joint projects, as well as the practical application of research results in areas such as healthcare, ecology, digital technologies, and space research; additionally, indicators of personnel training (PhDs, postdocs) in interdisciplinary fields and the contribution of projects to addressing priority sustainable development challenges are taken into account, which together allow for a comprehensive assessment of the effectiveness and impact of the university’s interdisciplinary scientific activities.

The university has established and is actively developing a specialized infrastructure designed to support interdisciplinary research groups; It includes modern research centers and laboratories that pool resources in the fields of biomedicine, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, ecology, geoinformatics, physics, and space technologies, as well as high-performance computing infrastructure (supercomputing capabilities and data storage systems), digital platforms for big data processing, specialized equipment for biotechnology and medical research, geoinformation and remote sensing methods for environmental monitoring, and engineering and prototyping facilities, including laboratories for robotics and microsatellite technologies; This infrastructure facilitates the integration of various scientific disciplines, provides access to modern experimental and computational tools, and enables the effective implementation of interdisciplinary projects of high scientific and applied significance.

Al-Farabi Kazakh National University provides specialized administrative support for interdisciplinary research groups, aimed at supporting projects throughout their entire lifecycle; this includes coordinating the preparation and submission of applications for grant and program-specific funding, methodological and expert assistance in forming interdisciplinary consortia and research teams, support for contractual and financial project activities, assistance with procurement procedures for scientific equipment and services, as well as support regarding compliance with regulatory requirements and reporting to government and international organizations; Additionally, organizational support is provided for international cooperation, interaction with industrial partners, and assistance in commercializing research results, which collectively creates favorable conditions for the effective implementation of interdisciplinary scientific initiatives.

Al-Farabi Kazakh National University operates a system for the career development and long-term employment of academic and teaching staff, which, among other things, encourages participation in interdisciplinary research; it is implemented through competitive hiring procedures with the possibility of subsequent contract extensions, a system of performance evaluation and professional development, as well as through the consideration of research achievements in academic and administrative career advancement (assistant professor – associate professor – full professor, project director, laboratory director, etc.); at the same time, participation in interdisciplinary projects, publications in high-impact journals, securing funding, and the implementation of research results are considered significant performance criteria that influence career advancement, participation in research programs, and access to additional resources, thereby creating institutional incentives for the development of interdisciplinary research.
