A GIS Platform “Eco Map Campus” Presented for International Students of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences
The Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University presented the GIS-based map “Eco Map Campus”. The “Eco Map Campus” web map was developed by Mukhtarov Ulan Baitursynuly, a 1st-year doctoral student of the educational program “8D05202 – Geography”, as part of practice-oriented training and the application of modern GIS technologies.

This digital product is an interactive web map designed to facilitate navigation across the university campus, which is characterized by a large area and a complex spatial structure. The map includes all academic and administrative buildings of KazNU, along with essential reference information on campus facilities.

The project is primarily aimed at international students and professors, as well as first-year students and prospective applicants who often face difficulties in navigating the campus during their initial visits. The web map enables users to quickly locate required buildings, access basic information about campus facilities, and develop a comprehensive understanding of the university’s spatial layout.

The project aligns with the university’s priorities in digitalizing the educational environment and contributes to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 – Quality Education, by promoting an inclusive and accessible learning environment. In addition, it supports SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure and SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities, reflecting the development of innovative digital infrastructure and the concept of a sustainable “smart campus”.
The Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management continues to support initiatives aimed at integrating GIS solutions into the educational process and everyday university life, thereby facilitating the adaptation of international students and advancing KazNU’s digital services.
