At the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences, master’s students of the educational programme “7M05206 – Hydrology,” including staff members of the State Institution for Mudflow and Avalanche Protection of Kazakhstan conducted a preventive seminar for university students focused on early warning of climate- and hydrology-related emergencies.

The event aimed to explain the principles of early warning systems and to develop practical skills for appropriate public behaviour in the event of climate-induced emergencies. During the seminar, students were provided with information on the most common natural hazards in mountainous and foothill areas, including mudflows, landslides, and snow avalanches.

Special attention was given to: the causes of mudflow, landslide, and avalanche processes; individual and collective precautionary measures; rules of conduct for the population during emergency threats and events; the role and functions of hydraulic and protective structures in risk reduction and safety assurance.

The seminar was accompanied by demonstration materials and practical examples based on the professional experience of specialists from State Institution for Mudflow and Avalanche Protection of Kazakhstan, which enabled participants to better understand the importance of prevention and timely response to hazardous hydrological phenomena.

The event was held within the framework of Sustainable Development Goal 13 “Climate Action,” aimed at enhancing societal resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related risks and natural disasters. The organization and implementation of the seminar contributed to improving students’ knowledge in the field of hydrological safety, fostering a culture of emergency preparedness, and strengthening the link between the educational process and practical tasks related to public safety.
