KazNU employees completed an internship in Japan
Employees of al-Farabi Kazakh National University have completed a scientific and educational internship at the University of Tsukuba (Japan).
The trip was organized at the invitation of the Japanese side as part of the Campus-in-Campus program and became part of the developing cooperation between the two universities in the field of implementing the Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The internship was attended by employees of the Department of Recreational Geography and Tourism of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management of KazNU: PhD candidate, senior Researcher Eldar Nuruli; PhD, senior researcher Akmaral Sapiyeva; Master's student, junior researcher Dinara Nurkyzy; doctoral student, lecturer, researcher Aida Kaliyeva.
The internship program focused on key areas of sustainable development and included issues of environmental monitoring, natural resource management, sustainable tourism, spatial planning, as well as the use of geoinformation technologies and digital analysis methods. The program was implemented through a series of working meetings with professors and research teams at the University of Tsukuba.
During the meeting with Professor Takashi Matsushima, engineering and information approaches to the analysis of natural and territorial processes, as well as the possibilities of integrating geospatial data into interdisciplinary research, were discussed. Professor Fatwa Ramdani's laboratory examined the application of GIS and spatial analysis in research on sustainable development, environmental policy, and environmental impact assessment.
Separate meetings were devoted to the geography of tourism and the study of cultural landscapes (Professor Keisuke Matsui), as well as the use of machine learning, artificial intelligence and remote sensing in agricultural and environmental research (Associate Professor Ahamed Tofael). Issues of geological and volcanic risks, the development of information systems for monitoring and preventing natural disasters were discussed with Professor Joel Bandibas.
As part of the internship, the KazNU delegation also got acquainted with the activities of the NipCA project, visited the National Research Institute of Earth Sciences and Disaster Prevention (NIED), as well as the GSI and Geological Museum museums. The practical part included field observations in the cities of Tsukuba, Tokyo and Ibaraki Prefecture.
The final stage was the final presentation of the internship results, conducted in a hybrid format with the participation of representatives of the University of Tsukuba and al-Farabi Kazakh National University, during which proposals for the development of joint scientific and educational projects were presented.
