Al-Farabi KazNU Lecturer Participates in Almaty Marathon as a Volunteer
On September 28, Kudaybergenov Sergazy Yerezhepuly, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Religious Studies and Cultural Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy and Political Science of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, took part as a volunteer in one of the largest sporting events in Central Asia — Almaty Marathon, held in Almaty.
The marathon is organized by the “Courage to Be First” Corporate Foundation and was held for the fourteenth time this year, starting from Republic Square. The large-scale sporting event brought together 16,000 athletes from more than 60 countries, demonstrating its growing international reputation and its important role in promoting a healthy lifestyle.
In 2025, Almaty Marathon set two new records. More than 1,200 international participants registered for the race, while 1,500 runners applied for the classic 42.2 km marathon distance, marking the highest figures in the event’s history.
The race route began at Republic Square and ran along Al-Farabi Avenue, offering participants stunning views of the majestic Zailiysky Alatau mountains. Along the route, runners passed several iconic landmarks of Almaty, including the First President’s Park, the Botanical Garden, and other culturally and historically significant sites.
Participants could choose from several race categories: the 42.2 km marathon, 21.1 km half marathon, 10 km run, as well as 10 km Nordic walking. In addition, the Ekiden relay race was organized for corporate teams, in which the marathon distance was divided among six runners. All finishers received commemorative medals, while winners of the main distances were awarded cash certificates, medals, certificates of merit, and valuable prizes.
The participation of an Al-Farabi KazNU lecturer as a volunteer in this international sporting event reflects the university’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 3 — Good Health and Well-being, as well as to promoting an active lifestyle, volunteerism, and social responsibility.
