The UNESCO Chair for Sustainable Development organized a round table on "Water Protection" within the framework of the conference "Farabi alemi", the sixth goal of sustainable development - clean water and sanitation, i.e. ensuring the availability and rational use of water resources and sanitation for all people. The main purpose of this event is to make a small contribution to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The sixth Sustainable Development Goal aims to ensure the organized provision of safe drinking water and sanitation for all and focuses on the sustainable management of water, wastewater and ecosystems, emphasizing the importance of an enabling environment.

Overall, the sixth Sustainable Development Goal consists of several targets and indicators, namely Ensure universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all by 2030; Ensure universal and equitable access to adequate sanitation by 2030; Improve water quality by 2030 by reducing pollution, eliminating waste discharges and reducing releases of hazardous chemicals and materials, doubling the proportion of untreated wastewater, and significantly increasing the recycling and safe reuse of wastewater.

The key indicators for these targets are Share of population with access to safe drinking water sources and safe sanitary conditions; Share of properly treated wastewater; Water bodies of satisfactory quality according to average indicators; Increase in water use efficiency; Degree of implementation of water resources management mechanisms; Share of transboundary water basins with cooperation programs in the field of water resources management, Time of change in distribution of aquatic ecosystems over the course of the year; Share of transboundary water basins where cooperation programs in the field of water resources management are in place, Time of change in distribution of aquatic ecosystems over the course of the year.

During the event, Mukhammeduali Mamykbaev, specialist of the Balkhash-Alakol Basin Inspectorate for regulation and protection of water resources use, reported on current problems and tasks of activity on control over rational use of water resources. The event was very attractive. The trainees were saturated with a lot of information, showed interest and actively participated. The young people realized the necessity of hard work and the importance of water saving in order to achieve the goals of sustainable development.

At the end of the event, a refreshing quiz was conducted for the students of the department. Prizes were given to the students who scored high marks for active participation and answering questions. The roundtable participants drew general conclusions and thanked the guests for sharing their activities and water issues.
