Students interning at the Institute of Seismology
In accordance with Goal 8 of the Sustainable Development Goals, “Decent Work and Economic Growth,” specialists from the Institute of Seismology held a meeting in the autumn semester of this academic year with students majoring in “Natural and Technogenic Hazards” and “Environmental Protection and Life Safety”, inviting them to undertake industrial practice at the institute. Accordingly, five second-year students of the “Natural and Technogenic Hazards” program are currently undergoing practical training at the institute.
Internship at the Institute of Seismology provides students with a unique opportunity to acquire practical skills in the field of seismology, as well as to familiarize themselves with current research and technologies. During the practice, students are introduced to various types of seismographs, their operating principles, and equipment. They participate in fieldwork for the installation and maintenance of seismographs and receive information on seismic activity. Additionally, students, together with specialists, perform tasks related to the analysis of seismic data, determination of earthquake parameters, noise filtering, and signal acquisition using specialized software.
Students are also provided with information on studying the impact of geological conditions on the propagation of seismic waves and on assessing the seismic stability of buildings and structures. Furthermore, they gain experience in seismic forecasting methods and participate in the development of earthquake early warning systems.
In the future, students will have the opportunity to participate in concrete scientific projects on seismicity, geological structures, or other areas of seismology. This allows them to combine theoretical knowledge with practical skills, laying the foundation for a career in science. To become a qualified and competitive specialist in their field, students are also engaged in studying programming languages for developing software to process seismic data.
Overall, industrial practice at the Institute of Seismology is aimed at the individual development of each student’s skills and interests. Working alongside experienced specialists helps students gain valuable experience and develop the professional competencies necessary for a successful career in seismology. We express our gratitude to the specialists of the Institute of Seismology for collaborating with our faculty and helping students gain comprehensive practical experience.
