Al-Farabi KazNU hosted a round table ‘Discussion of the results of the referendum held on 6 October 2024 on the construction of nuclear power plants in Kazakhstan’.
The event was attended by representatives of the management, faculty of the university, renowned scientists and experts in the field of nuclear energy.
The moderator of the round table, Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Technology of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University Nurzada Beisen welcomed the participants, noting the special importance of the event. She summarised the active work of the Faculty of Physics and Technology, which on the eve of the referendum initiated and organised a number of events aimed at explaining the goals and objectives of NPP construction, including round tables, quizzes, KVN, and others.
Deputy Chairman of the Board - First Vice-Rector Yerkin Duisenov spoke on behalf of the management. ‘Referendum is one of the forms of expression of direct democracy,’ said Yerkin Ermanovich. - The fact that our President Kasym-Jomart Tokayev put the issue of NPP construction to a national referendum confirms the democratic development of society. The results have shown that the majority of citizens believe it is necessary to build a nuclear power plant in our country. This is an issue of energy and national security of the country’.
Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan, Head of the Department of Theoretical and Nuclear Physics Medeu Abishev in his speech focused on the connection of the issue of NPP construction with green energy and the global strategy of decarbonisation of the economy. He also noted that in connection with the positive decision on the issue of NPP construction, the state and the education system will have to solve a set of tasks. The first is personnel training. Now on the basis of KazNU students are trained on specialities: nuclear physics, nuclear medicine and nuclear engineering. In addition, several other specialities are needed. Universities that train specialists for the nuclear power industry need to train 200 nuclear engineers for nuclear power plants.
The next direction is scientific research in collaboration with foreign centres and institutes. It will also require the creation of service companies and infrastructure. ‘There is a set of logistical, legislative and other tasks to be solved, and the work should start now,’ Medeu Yerzhanovich emphasised.
