On October 15, 2024, the leadership of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University paid an official visit to the Institute of Geography and Water Security of the Republic of Kazakhstan. This event aimed to strengthen cooperation between the educational and scientific communities in the field of geography and environmental management, with a focus on implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

During the visit, a meeting was held with the leadership of the Institute to discuss the prospects for scientific research in the areas of sustainable use of natural resources and water management. Both sides expressed their readiness for active exchange of scientific data, the development of joint projects, and the organization of scientific and practical events aimed at achieving SDGs such as Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), Goal 13 (Climate Action), and Goal 15 (Life on Land).

Special attention was given to the issues of climate change, water security, and environmental sustainability. The participants emphasized the importance of joint efforts in addressing the pressing environmental challenges facing Kazakhstan and Central Asia. These issues are directly related to the achievement of the SDGs, particularly in the context of increasing water scarcity and the need for environmental protection.

Additionally, it was announced that in mid-November, the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management of KazNU plans to open a branch at the Institute of Geography and Water Security. This new branch will serve as a center for scientific research and educational activities, providing students and researchers from both institutions the opportunity to collaborate and implement joint projects in the fields of water security, ecology, and sustainable development.

As part of the visit, KazNU staff were given tours of the Institute’s laboratories and research centers, where they were introduced to the latest developments in geographic research and water technologies. These innovations play a key role in the implementation of SDGs related to the effective management of natural resources and the preservation of biodiversity.

Future cooperation is expected to lead to the realization of large-scale international projects aimed at environmental protection, water security, and ensuring the sustainable development of the region in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
