This year, the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings – rating 2025 conducted evaluation work in the areas of scientific research, social programs, resource management, and the university's contribution to education. Al-Farabi Kazakh National University ranked 1200-1500 among Kazakhstani universities in this international ranking (which was attended by 2,000 universities from 115 countries), and 163rd in the QS world ranking of universities. Kurmanbayeva Meruert Sakenovna is a Kazakhstani scientist, Doctor of Biological Sciences, associate professor and current dean of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. Kurmanbayeva Meruert Sakenovna (1991-1996) studied at the Department of Botany of the Biological Faculty of the al-Farabi Kazakh National University, in 1996-1999 - at the postgraduate course of this department. In 2000, he successfully defended his scientific dissertation and received the degree of Candidate of Biological Sciences. She worked as a senior lecturer at the Botany Department of the Biological Faculty of the Kazakh National University (1999-2004). In 2010, M.S. Kurmanbayeva defended her doctoral dissertation and received the degree of Doctor of Biological Sciences. Kurmanbayeva M.S. is fluent in English, has an IELTS qualification and lectures in English, which helped her to complete an internship in Valencia (2013) under the "Orleu" program. Along with scientific research, she conducts a Botany course for English language bachelors as part of her teaching activities. Kurmanbayeva M.S. is a member of the Republican educational and methodological association; chairman of the state attestation. She has developed educational programs, modern educational programs, educational and methodological complexes of disciplines, e-books, and actively implements innovative teaching methods. In 2014, she was awarded the title of "Best University Teacher".

In 2014-2018, she was the scientific secretary of the Dissertation Council on Biological Specialties (PhD), established at Al-Farabi KazNU, since 2015 Professor of the Department of Biodiversity and Bioresources, Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. In 2015, she successfully completed a scientific internship at the laboratory of the Polytechnic University of Virginia and the State University in Blacksburg, USA, as well as internships in France, Italy, Switzerland and other European countries.

In 2020, M.S. Kurmanbayeva, PhD, was awarded the title of Associate Professor. M.S. Kurmanbayeva is the chairman of the State Attestation Commission for the specialty of Geobotany in PhD-doctoral studies; currently she lectures PhD students on the course "Protection of rare and endangered plant species", etc. Professor M.S. Kurmanbayeva is the dean of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. Professor Kurmanbayeva M.S. is actively developing and a very important scientific direction for the republic is the study of rare and endangered species of medicinal plants.

Together with Hungarian scientists (Professor Maria Hen from the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Natural Sciences in Budapest), research is actively conducted on the study of anatomical, morphological, phytochemical and molecular genetic studies. Kurmanbayeva M.S. also developed and used morphological, anatomical, phytochemical and genetic biomarkers for environmental assessment of the state of the environment in the south-east of Kazakhstan in research. The results of these studies are reflected in scientific articles in journals with a high rating on the Scopus database in the first quartile and patents of the Republic of Kazakhstan. At the same time, scientific research is being conducted to experimentally substantiate the use of new sulfur-containing preparations on perennial wheat. Based on the results of her research, M.S. Kurmanbayeva has published more than 200 scientific papers, textbooks and patents, articles with a high percentile published in foreign and national publications. Kurmanbayeva M.S. takes an active part in the work and makes presentations at international and national conferences. The results of the study were presented at international conferences and symposiums in France, the USA, the UAE, Russia, Germany, etc.

Under the guidance of Professor Kurmanbayeva M.S., 4 PhD doctors successfully defended, received a PhD degree, and also trained more than 30 undergraduates. She is currently the head of 5 doctoral students. The Association, along with active scientific and pedagogical activities. Professor M.S. Kurmanbayeva is an expert at the National Center for State Scientific and Technical Expertise (NSTC) and carries out a lot of organizational work. Under the leadership of M.S. Kurmanbayeva, the "Winter garden of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University" was created.

Work has also been organized in the greenhouse complex of the university, which makes a great contribution to the development of the university. In addition, the Kurmanbayeva Scientific School was established, which, as chairman of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology, organizes conferences, round tables and seminars. From 2017 to the present, M.S. Kurmanbayeva has been a member of the editors of the Russian journal Science and Education and an expert reviewer of highly rated journals.

Kurmanbayeva M.S. completed a scientific internship within the framework of projects, constantly improves her qualifications, completed a scientific internship in Hungary (2021), Turkey (2021, 2022) and won the International Erasmus+ Program jointly with the Debrecen Hungarian University (2022). She is a scholarship holder of the Bolashak program within the framework of the 500-Galym project.

On March 27-28, 2024, in accordance with the 15th goal of the SDGs, the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology held an international scientific forum "Modern trends in the sustainable development of Biological Sciences" dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Al Farabi Kazakh National University, indexed in the Scopus bibliographic database, was visited offline for the first time by 28 scientists from 15 countries of the world, in total about 200 scientists from 104 institutions took part in it, including online.

Among the organizers of the scientific conference were such large institutions as the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Scientific and Technical Cooperation Committee of the OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation) COMSTECH, Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development of the South (COMSATS), Institute of Dendrology of the National Bank of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Center for Biomedical Research.

During the preparation of the event, about 200 applications were received from 104 organizations from 15 countries, such as Kazakhstan, Japan, Germany, France, Hungary, China, Turkey, Pakistan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Russia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. According to the results of the expert assessment, more than 127 articles were submitted for publication in the collection of Bio Web of Conferences (Proceedings), indexed in international databases.

Now, as for the question of what this forum gave us, according to the results of the forum, the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology rose to 2nd place at the university level. The main purpose of this event was to discuss new approaches, technologies and strategies aimed at achieving sustainable development in the biological sciences, as well as developing solutions together with foreign scientists. The moderator of the forum, Meruert Sakenovna, was at a very high level of organizational skills, that is, the forum, unprecedented in the history of biological science, was highly appreciated.

The Kazakh-American Joint Center for the Study of Cytomatrix was established on the basis of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. A graduate of the Faculty of Biology, American scientist, Professor Shaiken Tattim coordinator, Dean of the Faculty Meruert Sakenovna of the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology activates the work of the center in interdisciplinary relations with the faculties of Medicine and Health care.

Biology is natural science, that is, special laboratories and classrooms for the study of materials and objects must meet modern requirements. Kurmanbayeva Meruert Sakenovna became the best researcher and the owner of the state scientific scholarship in 2024. This award was specially presented by the Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nurbek Sayasat.

Kurmanbayeva Meruert Sakenovna has been a qualified head (2016-2023) of the Department of Biodiversity and Bioresources for many years, at the same time a scientist and a teacher.
