KazNU's promotion in the world rankings was discussed

27 january, 2025

The Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted a meeting of the Academic Council dedicated to the university's promotion in international rankings.

The speaker at the meeting was Yerkin Duisenov, Deputy Chairman of the Board and First Vice-Rector. He presented an analysis of the faculty reports for the first half of the year, focusing on the work plans for international rankings such as QS and THE. The issues, proposed solutions, and action plans to improve the university's positions were discussed. Yerkin Duisenov emphasized that achieving high rankings requires enhancing the quality of scientific research, developing innovative programs, and focusing more on training highly qualified personnel.

The next item on the agenda was the report by Aida Kistaubaeva, Director of the Department of Science and Innovation at KazNU. She analyzed the university's position in the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking. Aida Serikovna discussed the existing issues affecting the university's ranking indicators and presented solutions and an action plan to improve its position. For example, one of the challenges mentioned was the low visibility of the university's scientific publications.

The number of high-quality scientific publications, especially in international journals that are cited by other researchers, holds significant weight for THE rankings. The speaker highlighted examples from neighboring countries like China and Singapore, where incentive programs have been introduced to encourage researchers to publish in top-tier journals (Q1, Q2 according to Scopus/WoS). These programs include financial rewards for articles with high impact factors, additional bonuses for publications in prestigious journals such as Nature or Science, and for citation counts.

The Chairman of the Board and Rector of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Zhanseit Tuimebayev, instructed the development of a roadmap, emphasizing the need to strengthen collaboration with industrial enterprises, factories, and plants, with a focus on the commercialization of scientific developments. "All scientific projects must serve the economy. This is the instruction of the President of the country. Ultimately, such activities will be reflected in the university's rankings",- the rector noted.

During the meeting, the academics also raised issues concerning the optimal use of resources, academic mobility for master's and doctoral students, the need to improve the quality of publications, as well as active participation in scientific conferences and the creation of interdisciplinary research groups.
