"Measures to Prevent Pollution of Marine Ecosystems Caused by Human Activities"

3 february, 2025

On February 3, 2025, Senior Lecturer Syraiyl S. from the Department of Biophysics, Biomedicine, and Neuroscience conducted a lecture for first-year master's students of the 7M01504-Biology program on the topic "Measures to Prevent Pollution of Marine Ecosystems Caused by Human Activities" within the framework of SDG 14. The lecture aimed to provide students with in-depth knowledge on the issues of protecting marine ecosystems from pollution and preserving them.

Oceans and seas play a crucial role in human life, ecology, the economy, and culture. Moreover, as the 14th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) is "Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources," protecting the homeland and the ecological environment must begin with us.

The negative impacts of human activities on marine ecosystems were discussed. The main causes of pollution include:

  1. Industrial waste and chemicals
  2. Plastics and other household waste
  3. The impact of construction activities and marine transport on the environment
  4. Harmful chemicals in agriculture
  5. Oil transportation and spills in the sea.

The consequences of marine ecosystem pollution are far-reaching. From an ecological perspective, it harms biodiversity and leads to the extinction of many marine animals and plants. Economically, such pollution negatively affects fisheries, tourism, and the transportation of goods via maritime routes.

The event aimed to provide students with in-depth knowledge on the protection of marine ecosystems and their preservation. To reduce pollution and restore ecological balance, not only legislative measures are necessary, but also a change in the awareness and behavior of people, especially youth. Sustainable development and ecological education will play a significant role in the future actions of students. Therefore, the event was organized to instill a sense of responsibility in students for protecting the environment.
