KAZNU HOSTS SEMINAR ON PROTECTING MARINE ECOSYSTEMS WITHIN SDG 14

    On February 3, 2025, at the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, senior lecturer of the Department of Biophysics, Biomedicine, and Neuroscience, PhD Sıraiyl S., conducted an educational seminar titled “Measures to Prevent Marine Ecosystem Pollution Caused by Human Activity”. The seminar was organized for first-year master’s students of the 7M01504 – Biology program and held within the framework of SDG 14 – Life Below Water: Conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas, and marine resources.

The seminar aimed to provide students with a deep understanding of the role of oceans and seas in ecology, economy, and human life, as well as to raise environmental responsibility among youth.

Key activities during the seminar included:

Lecture on the importance of ocean and marine ecosystems and their role in maintaining ecological balance;

Discussion of major sources of marine pollution, including industrial and chemical waste, plastics and household garbage, agricultural chemicals, maritime transport, and oil spills;

Analysis of the ecological and economic consequences of pollution, such as biodiversity loss, declining fisheries, and negative impacts on tourism;

Interactive discussion with students on ways to reduce human impact on marine ecosystems.

The seminar significantly contributed to improving students’ environmental literacy and fostering sustainable thinking. Participants gained comprehensive knowledge about the causes and consequences of marine pollution and learned the importance of changing behavior to preserve natural resources. The event also strengthened KazNU’s contribution to achieving SDG 14 and reinforced related indicators in the THE Impact Rankings.
