On March 20, at the Faculty of Oriental Studies of KazNU, eco-activist of Recycle Birge Zhandar Zhanabel gave a lecture on “Waste Sorting.” Since 2019, this project has organized ecological events, reaching over 100,000 people.
The lecture began with an overview of the harmful effects of waste on nature and human health and continued with data showing that Kazakhstan has accumulated 125 million tons of waste covering 32,000 hectares. It was emphasized that waste sorting and recycling are crucial for reducing landfill expansion. Eco-stations in the country accept 4 types of plastic, 5 types of glass, 3 types of paper, and 2 types of metal, while other waste can be brought to Recycle Birge eco-campaigns.
Waste sorting is not difficult: each item has a label indicating its material. However, not all items are recyclable, making conscious consumption essential. The lecture concluded with a quote from Robert Swan Obe: “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.”
