Women in Academia: Balancing Teaching and Research

11 february, 2026

On February 11, 2026, in celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a meaningful interview titled “Women in Academia: Balancing Teaching and Research” was held. The event was attended by lecturers of the Department of Religious Studies and Cultural Studies — Dinara Utebayeva, Zhanna Kantarbayeva, and Aizhan Kuderina — who discussed key issues related to the role of women scholars and their professional paths in the contemporary academic environment.

During the discussion, participants addressed the challenges of balancing research and teaching activities, reconciling professional development with family responsibilities, and managing the internal tensions between personal and professional identity.

It was noted that today women scholars are often required to perform multiple roles simultaneously: educator, researcher, mother, family member, and public figure. Maintaining balance among these roles frequently leads to emotional and psychological strain. The participants emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of institutional support and mutual understanding to ensure the sustainable development of women in academia.

Another important topic of the discussion was the ability to present oneself as an expert on social media and academic platforms. It was highlighted that professional visibility in today’s academic space is a crucial factor in building scholarly reputation. Furthermore, developing a professional image, disseminating research achievements, and expanding professional networks were identified as integral components of a successful academic career.

The meeting also addressed psychological barriers commonly experienced by women scholars, including the impostor phenomenon, the inner critic, and self-doubt. Participants noted that these challenges are widespread in academic settings and require professional support and knowledge exchange. Special attention was given to strengthening self-esteem, recognizing personal achievements, and cultivating a culture of mutual support within the academic community.

In conclusion, the interview provided participants with an opportunity to share their experiences, openly discuss common challenges, and reinforce mutual support. Such initiatives contribute to the development of an inclusive, equitable, and progressive academic environment.

The event aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 5 (Gender Equality).
