Sustainable Development and the Formation of Information Culture in the Information Society

20 october, 2025

On October 20, 2025, an open seminar was held at the Department of World History, Historiography, and Source Studies on the topic "Sustainable Development and the Formation of Information Culture in the Information Society."

The event was organized by K.T. Tuyenbayeva, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences (Cand. Ped. Sci.).

The seminar was attended by master's and doctoral students of the "Library and Information Systems" educational program, as well as Professor Nurzipa Kumeshbaykyzy Alpysbayeva, Deputy Head of the Department for Academic, Methodological, and Educational Affairs.

The goal of the seminar was to discuss the values of sustainable development, the importance of information culture and critical thinking in the context of the information society, and to determine the role of education and science in improving information literacy.

During the meeting, participants:

  • Analyzed the growth of information volume and its impact on the sustainability of society;

  • Discussed the culture of information selection, analysis, and responsible use;

  • Highlighted the importance of cooperation between the education, media, and IT sectors.

The content of the seminar was interconnected with several areas of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically:

  • Goal 4 – Quality Education: Improving the quality of education through the development of information and media literacy skills;

  • Goal 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure: Supporting the information society and digital culture;

  • Goal 16 – Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions: Developing a culture of ethical and responsible use of information;

  • Goal 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Strengthening partnerships between science, education, and media.

The seminar concluded with active and meaningful discussions among the participants. During the discussions, new ideas for developing information culture and specific approaches for strengthening critical thinking in the educational process were proposed.

The cognitive value of the seminar is the recognition of information culture as an important indicator of sustainable development. Sustainable development is not merely a goal at the state or organizational level. It begins with the culture of how each person works with information.

Responsible information use and increasing media literacy are key mechanisms for raising the intellectual potential of society and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
