Waste Sorting Experience in the Context of SDG 12

18 november, 2025

As part of the course “Municipal and Industrial Waste Management”, 4th-year Ecology students (6B05202) of the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Development, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University visited the Green Recycle Waste Sorting Plant in Almaty. The field trip was led by senior lecturer A.B. Kerimkulova.

Students observed waste reception, sorting, and separation into fractions such as plastic, paper, glass, and metal. This hands-on experience allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of waste management systems and improve their professional skills.

The session is directly linked to Sustainable Development Goal 12 — Responsible Consumption and Production.

The practical experience helped students understand the importance of waste sorting, increase recycling rates, and appreciate the need to develop a circular economy in Kazakhstan.
