On 20 November 2025, the Faculty of Journalism at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted the launch of Kyrgyz poet Melis Mamatzhanov’s new poetry collection titled “Abstract World”.
The event brought together students, faculty members, and representatives of the cultural community.
The meeting was opened by the Dean of the Faculty, Kanat Auesbai, who highlighted the guest’s literary work and contributions to journalism and literature. He stated:
“Today we welcome Melis Mamatzhanov from the city of Osh — not only a Kyrgyz poet, but also an author well-known to Kazakh readers. His poems have been published in national newspapers and have become works memorized and cherished by our students. Welcome to this meeting, which serves as a golden bridge between the Kazakh and Kyrgyz peoples.”
Melis Mamatzhanov was born on 11 January 1992 in the village of Zhana-Aryk, Kara-Suu district, Osh region. In 2015 he graduated from the Osh Humanities and Pedagogical Institute with a major in Kyrgyz language and literature. Since 2016 he has worked as a teacher of Kyrgyz language and literature at Osh State University (OshSU). From 2017 to 2019 he served as editor-in-chief of the student newspaper Nur, from 2019 to 2023 he worked as an assistant to the rector of OshSU, and since 2023 he has been the head of the rector’s office.
The poet is the winner of TURKSOY’s “Five Poets” project, a recipient of the Jusup Balasagyn badge, first-place laureate of the Ch. Tursunbekov “Young Wave” competition, winner of the Zaiyrbek Azhymatov Award, holder of the “Poet of the Year” title, and has been honored for his contribution to the culture of the Turkic world. His first poetry collection, “Apakemdyn almassy” was published in 2014, and the newly presented “Abstract World” is his second book.
During the launch event, Melis Mamatzhanov recited his poems, sharing verses dedicated to homeland, life, love, childhood, and nature. One of the poems he read included the following lines:
I was a soul striving for the light,
Left with a raindrop after the storm.
Between the days that gallop away,
Longing trembles across a thousand peaks…
The event was attended by Manas Nurmamatovich Tashibekov, Chairman of the Kyrgyz ethnocultural association “Muras”. Additionally, a performer named Nurdaulet participated and presented a traditional manas epic accompanied by a komuz, giving the evening a vivid national flavor that delighted students and guests.
Poet and philosopher Muratkhan Shokan—a member of the Writers’ Union of Kazakhstan, advisor to the Secretary General of the International TURKSOY organization, head of the “World of Literature” Center, and director of the “Tulga-Dostyk” Public Foundation—also attended and shared his thoughts on the author’s creative work.
At the end of the meeting, Melis Mamatzhanov read a poem he wrote during his visit to Kazakhstan and expressed his gratitude to the KazNU community.
The poet concluded the evening with the following lines:
No matter how many nations there are in the world,
None are as close as the Kyrgyz and the Kazakhs.
With these words, the literary evening at the faculty came to an end, leaving a deep impression on students and readers.
