Open Lecture: “Codicology: Its Role in Manuscript Studies”

On November 27, the National Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan hosted the fourth meeting of the open lecture series titled “Chagatai and Written Monuments.” The event brought together members of the academic community, young researchers, and attendees interested in Oriental studies.

This lecture series is becoming an important scholarly platform for the study of Turkic written heritage. This session was delivered by Dr. Ömir Tuyakbay, Senior Researcher at the Research Center “Written Monuments and Spiritual Heritage” of Al-Farabi University, a well-known manuscript specialist. Introducing Chagatai written heritage into scholarly circulation and a deeper exploration of codicological aspects of manuscripts are among the key directions in modern Turkology. https://www.facebook.com/groups/356911851052321/permalink/25195495203433975/

During the lecture, Dr. Tuyakbay examined the formation and development of codicology as a discipline and thoroughly explained methods of manuscript research within the Eastern written tradition. In addition, the discussion covered a wide range of topics, including the characteristics of text and material, the structure and preservation culture of manuscripts, the role of codicology in the modern academic environment, and the future of codicological studies in Kazakhstan.

At the end of the lecture, participants asked questions about methodological aspects of working with ancient written heritage and enriched their understanding through practical examples.
