On December 12, 2025, third-year students of the “Ecology” educational program of the UNESCO Chair for Sustainable Development took part in an excursion to the “Gylym Ordasy” Scientific and Cultural Center, dedicated to the Independence Day of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

During the visit, students explored archaeological excavations, unique paleontological findings, and collections of rare artifacts presented in the museums of archaeology and natural history. The participants learned about key stages in the ancient history of the region, migrations of early tribes, and the everyday life and cultural traditions reflected in the discovered objects.

Special interest was drawn to exhibits found in different years across the territory of Kazakhstan: stone tools, ceramic fragments, jewelry, elements of burial complexes, as well as reconstructions of ancient animals whose remains were uncovered during excavations. The students had the opportunity to examine authentic archaeological materials, study their structure, and hear the stories of their discovery.

The group also visited the rare books hall, where they learned about the origins of writing in Kazakhstan, the alphabets used throughout various historical periods, and how these processes influenced the cultural development of society. The manuscripts and old editions they viewed helped students better understand the evolution of written culture and its role in preserving historical heritage.

In addition, the students attended a children’s drawing contest dedicated to Independence Day, featuring works by schoolchildren on themes of patriotism, history, and Kazakhstan’s natural environment. The bright and sincere drawings added emotional depth to the event and demonstrated how ecological and cultural values are perceived by the younger generation.

The excursion was supervised by curator K.K. Khamitova, who ensured the organization and methodological guidance of the event.

The visit to “Gylym Ordasy” Scientific and Cultural Center allowed future ecologists to gain deeper insight into the relationship between nature and human civilization and to see how changes in climate, resources, and landscapes influenced the lives of ancient communities. The excursion became not only an educational experience but also an important part of shaping the students’ professional worldview.

On the eve of Independence Day, this excursion gained special significance, emphasizing the importance of historical memory, cultural continuity, and the pursuit of sustainable development in the country. The students expressed great interest and a desire to participate in future scientific and educational projects of the department.
