Consultative meetings on the preparation of the 7th National Report of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Biodiversity were held at UNDP. The report will be officially submitted to the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity in February 2026.

Representatives of government institutions, businesses, the scientific and academic community, and non-governmental organizations discussed with sectoral experts the progress of the report’s preparation, key issues arising from national priorities and monitoring results, best practices and risks, the implementation of sustainable practices, and modern tools for managing specially protected natural areas.

According to Artemyev, PhD in Engineering, Head of the Sustainable Tourism Laboratory at the National Center “Sustainable Development and Rational Use of Natural Resources” of Al-Farabi KazNU and UNDP National Expert on Ecotourism, ecotourism is an effective tool for ensuring the sustainability of territories under increasing anthropogenic pressure, primarily in specially protected natural areas. It is therefore no coincidence that the task of scientifically grounded regulation of tourist and recreational loads in protected areas is recognized as one of the most pressing issues for the conservation and sustainable development of ecosystems.

During the meeting, proposals were discussed to enhance the effectiveness of environmental protection measures and to improve policies and monitoring systems, including updated monitoring indicators. Participants emphasized the importance of involving specialists from various fields, as well as representatives of academic and university science, in consultative meetings. This approach made it possible, based on an analysis of national and global challenges, to form an objective assessment of the current state of biodiversity in Kazakhstan and to develop a set of proposals for inclusion in the final version of the report.
