Partnership between KazNU and Almaty Akimat for Sustainable Urban Development

Employees of the Laboratory of Geodemographic, Social, and Economic Research at the Center for Sustainable Development of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University PhD Gaukhar Kairanbayeva и PhD Laura Kenespayeva participated in a meeting with the Deputy Akim of Almaty, Abzal Nukenov.

During the meeting, current issues of the city’s socio-economic and demographic development were discussed. Special attention was paid to sustainable development, spatial planning, and comprehensive analysis of demographic processes with regard to the needs of the population.

Representatives of the Akimat expressed interest in the city’s population demographic forecast and the possibilities of scientific support for urban policy planning. The laboratory staff presented up-to-date analytical data, discussed trends in demographic development and prospects for sustainable population growth, and also addressed issues related to the quality of the urban environment.

Particular attention was given to the development of a partnership between the Almaty City Akimat and Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, aimed at conducting joint research, implementing scientific developments, and using demographic forecasts in the formulation of the city’s socio-economic development strategies. This initiative is directly related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11 — “Sustainable Cities and Communities” as it contributes to creating a safe, inclusive, and sustainable urban environment, improving the quality of urban infrastructure, and planning urban processes with consideration of the population’s needs.
