Gender Equality Through the Prism of Data Art: Visiting the Exhibition ‘Tirek: The Thread of Her Life’”

12 december, 2025

On December 12, 2025, within the framework of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 5 “Gender Equality,” PhD, Associate Professor of the Department of Theory and History of State and Law, Constitutional and Administrative Law, S.Abdullina, together with students of group 224 of the Faculty of Law of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, visited the data art exhibition “Tirek: The Thread of Her Life.”

The guided tour was conducted by the artist and curator of the exhibition, Zhanna Assanova, who introduced the visitors to the works of the artists and explained the meanings embedded in each exhibit. The uniqueness of the exhibition lies in the openness of the topic addressed: the problem exists and does not disappear regardless of the measures taken. Every year, dozens of women in Kazakhstan are subjected to domestic violence, and according to statistics, nearly 17% of girls face physical or other forms of violence from a partner (husband or cohabitant), while even more women suffer from beatings.

In their works, the artists are guided not only by emotions or personal attitudes toward the issue, but also rely on real data. The originality of the artworks lies in the fact that, at first glance, simple visual forms contain information about the types of violence, its scale, and the methods by which it is committed. The depth of pain and injustice caused by gender inequality profoundly affects every visitor to the data art exhibition with its sincerity and emotional power.
