Environmental Education as a Tool for the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals

27 january, 2026
26.01.2026. Within the framework of implementing free educational courses for the general public outside the university campus, the Head of the UNESCO Chair for Sustainable Development, Professor T.A. Bazarbayeva, delivered a lecture entitled “Environmental Education for the Implementation of Sustainable Development” to students of grades 7–8 of the boarding school of the Republican State Institution Kazakh National Academy of Arts named after T. Zhurgenov in Almaty.
During the lecture, students became familiar with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, their significance for modern society, as well as possible forms of personal contribution by each citizen to achieving a sustainable future. Particular attention was paid to the role of environmental education as a key instrument for developing environmental culture, fostering responsible attitudes toward natural resources, and promoting conscious behavior in everyday life.
Environmental education, viewed as the foundation of a careful and respectful attitude toward all components of the environment, gains special importance in the context of achieving SDG 4 “Quality Education”, and also contributes to the attainment of SDG 12 “Responsible Consumption and Production”, SDG 13 “Climate Action”, and SDG 15 “Life on Land.”

Such educational initiatives promote the early formation of sustainable values among young people and support the integration of sustainable development principles into the system of lifelong learning.
