A professor of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University participated as an expert in a training event organized by UNDP in Kazakhstan in cooperation with the Committee of Forestry and Wildlife of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, within the framework of the UNDP Global Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN).

During the event, practical knowledge was presented on the development and implementation of carbon offset projects with a high level of environmental integrity in the forestry and agricultural sectors. More than 100 representatives of government bodies, the financial and industrial sectors, the scientific community, validation and verification bodies, airlines, the private sector, as well as carbon project developers took part in the training.

Given the specific nature and complexity of carbon projects in the forestry and agricultural sectors, the training was designed as an applied capacity-building program. Within its framework, practical aspects of the development and assessment of carbon projects were discussed, including baseline setting, demonstration of additionality, monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) systems, measures to ensure environmental and social safeguards, as well as risk identification, with a particular emphasis on nature-based solutions. The training aimed to build a shared technical understanding among stakeholders involved in the functioning of carbon markets and the implementation of carbon projects.

The effective use of the potential of carbon markets requires clear, realistic, and investor-friendly rules. In this regard, Kazakhstan is already taking consistent steps, including introducing amendments to its legislation.
