The I International Online Winter School “Sorting and Disposal of Municipal Solid Waste” Has Started

On February 26, 2026, the I International Online Winter School entitled “Sorting and Disposal of Municipal Solid Waste” commenced its work at the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences, organized by the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Development, with the support of Baku State University (Azerbaijan) , the Kyrgyz National University named after J. Balasagyn (Kyrgyzstan), and the Central Asian-German Institute for the Protection of Ecosystems and Biodiversity. The event is held in anticipation of the International Day of Zero Waste. The moderator of the event is Bazarbayeva TursunkulAmankeldievna, Head of the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Development.

The event is organized in connection with the International Day of Zero Waste, observed annually on March 30 in accordance with the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 77/161 dated December 14, 2022.    

The aim of the Winter School is to introduce modern approaches to municipal solid waste management, sorting, and recycling, promote the principles of the circular economy, and strengthen scientific and practical cooperation in the field of sustainable development.

During the opening ceremony, welcoming speeches were delivered by Aktymbaeva Aliya Sagyndykovna, Dean of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management; Yusifova Makhluga Mail kyzy, Associate Professor of Baku State University; and Osmonbekova Raushan Bolotbekovna, Associate Professor of the Kyrgyz National University named after J. Balasagyn.  

The Winter School program covers municipal solid waste within the system of sustainable development and circular economy, global waste management challenges, methodology of morphological analysis, thermal treatment methods, the impact of waste on ecosystems, the Zero Waste concept, environmental legislation, and advanced international practices.

The program will continue until March 4, 2026. Participants are provided with lectures, video materials, practical assignments, and self-study activities.

The Winter School is an important international educational platform aimed at the implementation of SDG 12 - Responsible consumption and production, and the formation of an ecological culture.
