THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NUCLEAR POWER PLANT IS AN IMPORTANT STEP FOR THE LIFE OF THE COUNTRY

26 september, 2024

In his Address to the people of Kazakhstan “Fair Kazakhstan: Law and Order, Economic Growth, Public Optimism” President Kasym-Jomart Tokayev touched upon the issue of the need to build a nuclear power plant and proposed to resolve this issue by holding a national referendum: “The construction or refusal to build a nuclear power plant is an extremely important issue concerning the future of our country. Therefore, I propose to put it to a national referendum. The President also noted that despite the controversial nature of the issue, the development of nuclear energy is extremely important for the economic and social well-being of the citizens of Kazakhstan. Of course, Kazakhstan is a leader among the world's countries in uranium mining, which serves as the basis for the production of fuel for power plants. But, the shortage of electricity in Kazakhstan is already beginning to be felt, especially in the south of the country. Also emphasized are predictions that by 2030, Kazakhstan will begin to experience a huge shortage of electricity, which, according to official data, is no longer covered by available capacity. “We must think about the future, taking into account long-term national interests and the specifics of our country,” he said. He added that every step important for the life of the country should be taken “with the support of the people”.
The results of a nationwide referendum to be held on October 6 on the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan will put an end to the dispute between supporters and opponents of nuclear power.
