Finnish Meteorological Institute and KazNU: Partnership for Sustainable Development in Ecology
Dean of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, Doszhan N.S., participated in a meeting between the Deputy Chair of the Board – First Vice-Rector of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU), Y.E. Duisenov, and a delegation from the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI). The meeting was also attended by representatives of the Finnish Embassy, the Head of Air Quality at FMI, the General Director of "Kazhydromet" – the National Hydrometeorological Service of Kazakhstan, and the Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the World Meteorological Organization, D.K. Alimbayeva, along with the Deans of the Faculties of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, Geography and Environmental Management, the Director of the Department of International Cooperation, and the Head of the Commercialization Office.
The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss the prospects for cooperation between FMI and KazNU in the fields of meteorology and ecology. During the dialogue, representatives from both sides discussed a number of pressing issues related to environmental monitoring, improving air quality, and developing effective methods for addressing environmental problems. The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) has a long history of successful projects in climatology, and its expertise, combined with the scientific potential of KazNU, is capable of leading to significant scientific and practical achievements.
One of the key moments of the event was the signing of a tripartite Memorandum of Cooperation between FMI, KazNU, and "Kazhydromet." This document marked the beginning of a new stage in the development of international collaboration aimed at knowledge exchange, joint scientific research, and the implementation of innovative approaches in the fields of hydrometeorology and air pollution monitoring.
During the meeting, Dean Doszhan N.S. gave a presentation titled "Mathematical Methods of Solving Ecological Problems." In his presentation, he introduced the latest mathematical modeling methods that can be applied to solving environmental issues, such as forecasting air quality changes, modeling ocean pollution, and simulating air pollution. This presentation drew significant interest from all attendees and spurred an active discussion on possible directions for further cooperation.
Following the official part of the meeting, a campus tour was organized for the delegation, during which the guests were able to visit the modern laboratories of the Faculties of Geography and Environmental Management, as well as Chemistry and Chemical Technology. Representatives from FMI noted the high level of technical equipment in the laboratories of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, as well as the professionalism of the staff, opening up great prospects for joint scientific projects.
The meeting concluded with a working discussion among representatives of FMI, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, and "Kazhydromet," where specific mechanisms for implementing the provisions of the Memorandum were discussed, and further steps were planned for developing the cooperation.
This meeting marks an important step in the development of international scientific collaboration between the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and the Finnish Meteorological Institute in the fields of meteorology and ecology. The combined efforts of the two scientific institutions will enable the implementation of innovative approaches to solving global environmental problems and will contribute to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 ("Climate Action") and SDG 17 ("Partnerships for the Goals").
