Collect Plastic

26 october, 2024

On October 26, Rosa Sabirova, a senior lecturer in the Department of Mathematical and Computer Modeling, along with 3rd-year students from the MCM program, joined the "Collect Plastic" campaign. The event aimed to increase environmental awareness among students and promote sustainable development. Together, participants collected and recycled over 30 plastic bottles at the Sparklo machine installed in front of the KazNU rectorate building.

The unique feature of the Sparklo machine is that it not only facilitates plastic recycling but also motivates participants. For each recycled bottle, students and lecturers received bonus points in the Sparklo app, which can be used for discounts or charitable donations. This approach encourages students not only to care for the environment but also to develop a practical interest in sustainable habits.

The campaign was organized as part of a series of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

  • SDG #12 “Responsible Consumption and Production”: The collection and recycling of plastic contribute to responsible resource management and waste reduction. This skill is essential for future specialists who can apply these principles to implement eco-friendly standards in their workplaces.
  • SDG #13 “Climate Action”: Recycling plastic helps reduce the carbon footprint associated with producing and disposing of new plastic products. Students learn how their everyday actions can impact the climate positively.
  • SDG #4 “Quality Education”: Campaigns like this enhance the educational process, helping students develop not only academic knowledge but also environmental consciousness and responsibility toward the environment.

Rosa Sabirova noted that participation in such events allows students to go beyond theory and see firsthand how each person’s contribution is essential to building a sustainable future. Students expressed their enthusiasm to continue participating in similar initiatives and actively support university environmental efforts.

Thus, the "Collect Plastic" campaign became not only an opportunity to recycle but also a valuable educational event aimed at fostering environmental culture among youth.
