Chan Beng Sung Candidate of Political Sciences, Associate Professor
Chan Beng Sung was born in 1954 and is Korean. Since 2007, he has been working at the Department of the Far East at the Faculty of Oriental Studies of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. From 1984 to 1989, he studied at Hanyang University (Seoul, Republic of Korea), majoring in Cultural Anthropology (Bachelor’s degree). From 1989 to 1993, he worked as a director at the Institute of Asian Cultures (Seoul, Republic of Korea). In 1993, he completed a Master’s degree in Management at Dankuk University (Republic of Korea). In 1994, he came to Almaty, Kazakhstan, to study Russian and pursue PhD courses.
In 2010, he graduated from the doctoral program of the Faculty of Philosophy and Political Science at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University with a degree in Political Science. In 2021, he received the academic title of Associate Professor in the specialty of Political Science. Chang Beng Sung is the author of the English monograph The Process of Development of Interstate Relations between the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Kazakhstan (Political Science Analysis). He is also the translator of the book Important Cultural Heritage No. 15: Traditional Lion Dance in Pukchong: An Explanation, published by the National Center for Cultural Intangible Heritage of the Republic of Korea in 2014.
He has authored 37 scientific papers, 4 of which are in journals included in the Scopus database, including 3 in the Clarivate Analytics database. Chang Beng Sung is the editor of the international periodical journal Proceedings of Multidisciplinary Studies for the Future Asian Community (ISSN 2508-4283), volumes 1 (2016), 2 (2017), 3 (2018), and 4 (2019). From 2013 to 2017, he directed the annual special practical course Korean Traditional Music and Dance in collaboration with the Association of Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Korea at UNESCO.
Since 2012, he has been the director of the One Asia Club in Central Asia and has headed the courses of the international grant project “One Asia” for universities in Kazakhstan. He also participated as a guest lecturer in courses for the international program “One Asia” at the Complutense University of Madrid and the Autonomous University of Madrid from 2017 to 2020; the Thai Chamber of Commerce University (Bangkok) in 2018; Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi) in 2018; and the University of Eastern Finland in 2018.
Chan Beng Sung has taken part in international conferences in Korea, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Japan. From 2011 to 2019, he participated as a jury member and chaired the annual international oratory competition in the Korean language held with the universities of Hanyang and Namseul.
He lectures and conducts classes in the following disciplines at a high professional level: Oriental Language for Communicative Purposes, Hieroglyphics, Multimedia Course of the Korean Language, Translation in the Field of International Relations, Oriental Language for Professional Purposes, Discursive Analysis in Anthropological Research, Chinese Characters in the Korean Language, and Oriental Language for Professional Purposes.
He actively seeks out grant programs from Korean universities and continues to send KazNU students for language internships, and for master’s and doctoral studies.
