Initiation Ceremony for First-Year Students based on SDGs 4, 6 of the Department of Geography, Land Management, and Cadastre
On November 23, 2024, the Department of Geography, Land Management, and Cadastre of Al-Farabi KazNU held its annual traditional event – the initiation ceremony for first-year students. This year, the event took place at one of Almaty’s most iconic locations – the high-altitude Medeu skating rink. SDGs 4 (Ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all) and 16 (Promoting peaceful and open societies for sustainable development, ensuring access to justice for all and building effective, accountable and participatory institutions at all levels) were taken as the basis.
The event brought together not only first-year students but also faculty members, senior students, and alumni of the department, creating a unique atmosphere of friendship, inspiration, and unity. Surrounded by the majestic mountains of the Zailiyskiy Alatau, Medeu became not just a venue for the event but a symbol of the new horizons awaiting our students.
The day’s program was vibrant and diverse. First-year students participated in team games that helped them strengthen their team spirit and get to know each other better. Engaging quizzes on geographical topics, sports competitions, and exciting quests charged everyone with positive energy and provided an opportunity to showcase their knowledge and creativity.
Faculty members addressed the students with inspiring words, wishing them success in their studies and in achieving ambitious goals.
Special attention was given to the values passed down by the department from generation to generation: a love for science, respect for the environment, and responsibility for contributing to the development of geography, land management, and cadastre as strategically important fields.
After the official part, participants continued to interact in an informal setting. The organizers prepared refreshments so the students could enjoy their time outdoors in the company of like-minded peers. Of course, the day wouldn’t be complete without taking memorable photos against the snowy landscapes of Medeu.
This event marked the first step for first-year students into the large academic family of KazNU. Ahead lies an exciting journey into the world of knowledge, research, and new discoveries. We are confident that this day will remain in their memory as a symbol of the beginning of a bright and fulfilling chapter of their lives.
