SDG 16 “Peace, Justice, and Effective Institutions”

On December 11, 2024, at the Faculty of Law at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted an event dedicated to International Human Rights Day. The event was organized by the professors of the Department of Theory and History of State and Law, Constitutional and Administrative Law, Doctor of Law Ibraeva A.S., Doctor of Law Baimakhanova D.M., and members of the student club "Amanat." The theme of the event was “The Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948 and Its Role in Developing Mechanisms for the Protection of Human Rights and Freedoms”, held within the framework of SDG 16: “Peace, Justice, and Effective Institutions”. The speaker was fourth-year student Aslan Karibay, who emphasized the importance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as the foundation for the development of national legislation in all countries of the world. Also, the lecturer defined human and civil rights and freedoms, provided their classification, and focused on the factors influencing the effective development of all components of mechanisms for protecting citizens' rights and freedoms.

Another speaker, Zhanerke Kanbatyrova, explored the history of the acceptance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and provided an in-depth analysis of the provisions of the 1966 International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the 1966 International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights. Students actively participated in discussions regarding the provisions of the Declaration and the Covenants.

Summing up the speeches, Professor Ibraeva A.S. highlighted that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, together with the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan, serves as the foundation for the development of human and civil rights and freedoms in Kazakhstan.
