Legal issues of the use and protection of transboundary water resources

January 20, 2025, a refresher course for the Faculty of Law called "Fundamentals of Law and Anti-Corruption Culture" was launched. Within the framework of this course, a number of topical legal issues were considered, including the important topic of the use and protection of transboundary water resources, with a presentation by Associate Professor of the Department of Customs, Financial and Environmental Law K.J. Kuandykov. Transboundary water resources occupy a key place in international law, since their rational use and protection require coordinated efforts by several States. The issues of legal regulation of water resources, their protection and equitable distribution are of particular relevance in the context of global challenges such as climate change and increasing demand for water. In this context, the issues of sustainable development and ensuring environmental safety, which are part of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 6, "Ensuring accessibility and sustainable management of water resources for all", are of particular importance. Effective water resources management has a direct impact on the social, economic and environmental well-being of all countries, which underlines the importance of legal mechanisms to ensure equitable distribution and protection of water resources. The course was organized with the support of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, the Institute for Advanced Training and Additional Education, as well as the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Law, which invariably contribute to the professional development of teachers and the introduction of relevant knowledge into the educational process. We would like to thank the coordinator of this course, Professor, Doctor of Law A. S. Ibraeva, for her high professionalism and comprehensive coverage of complex legal aspects in this field. The Department of Customs, Financial and Environmental Law continues to actively work on the development of professional competencies of the teaching staff, striving to contribute to the improvement of legal science and legal education in Kazakhstan, as well as to the implementation of sustainable development goals in the field of ecology and law. This process is actively supported by the head of the Department, Doctor of Law, Professor Kuanаlieva G.A., who, due to her high professionalism and leadership qualities, plays a key role in the successful implementation of educational and scientific initiatives of the department.
