My Student Life at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University: Overcoming Challenges and New Opportunities

26 march, 2025

I am Xu Yan, a first-year student at the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.

When I first arrived in Almaty, the biggest challenge for me was the language barrier. To adapt more quickly, I began intensively studying Russian. At first, pronunciation and grammar were difficult, but over time, I started using simple phrases to communicate. This progress brought me great satisfaction and strengthened my confidence in continuing to learn the language.

Studying at university requires discipline and responsibility. The teachers are strict but patient, and the study material combines theoretical depth and practical application, making the learning process both challenging and engaging.

Life in Almaty has been a new experience, bringing me both difficulties and joys. Currently, I rent a room on Karibek Batyr Street. Sometimes, I feel lonely, but I have learned to live independently and take care of myself. Every evening, after a busy day of studying, I return home with a sense of accomplishment.

In my free time, I enjoy exploring the city and going for walks with friends. Almaty has many unique places worth visiting. I was especially impressed by the snowy peaks of the Zailiysky Alatau mountains and the famous Medeu skating rink. These places allow me to connect with nature and feel the energy of the city.

My best friend Bauyrzhan introduced me to traditional Kazakh cuisine. Now, I enjoy shashlik, baursaks, and other national dishes, which leave a lasting impression.

Studying at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University is not just a challenge but a great opportunity. At this prestigious university, I have adapted to a new rhythm of life, gained valuable knowledge, and made true friends. This journey is just beginning, and I look forward to new achievements in the future!
