Exploring Japan from Within: My Experience in Kanazawa

My name is Ruslan Akimniyazov, and I am a third-year student at Al-Farabi KazNU. Thanks to the academic mobility program, I had the opportunity to spend a semester at Kanazawa University in Japan. This experience became a crucial period in my life, filled with new discoveries, opportunities for self-development, and deep immersion in the academic and cultural environment of another country.
The academic mobility program at Kanazawa University exceeded all my expectations. Initially, I saw it as a chance to improve my language skills, but it turned out to be much more—a full immersion into the unique Japanese way of life.
One of my biggest achievements was not only significantly improving my Japanese language skills but also gaining practical work experience in the service industry. Working part-time at a local café allowed me to practice the language in real-life situations and understand the specifics of Japanese work culture. The principles of politeness, teamwork, and professional ethics that I witnessed daily were a true cultural revelation for me.
Participating in university and city events greatly broadened my horizons. Thanks to the academic mobility program, I had unique opportunities: attending a traditional Japanese performance for free, visiting Gokayama—a scenic village in Toyama Prefecture known for its Edo-period architecture and craftsmanship, and even skiing in the mountains near Kanazawa. Traditional festivals, language clubs, and cultural workshops turned my stay in Japan into an unforgettable adventure. Every day was filled with new acquaintances, experiences, and opportunities for personal growth.
Intercultural communication was particularly impactful. I met students from different countries who, like me, were passionate about Japan. Collaborative projects, evening discussions, and friendly gatherings helped me not only enhance my language skills but also build a valuable international network.
This program was a significant stepping stone in my professional and personal development. Without the exchange program with Kanazawa University, I would never have been able to experience Japan in such depth. Now, I can confidently say that my perspective on international education and cross-cultural communication has changed entirely. Kanazawa will always remain a city of discoveries, growth, and new opportunities for me.
