Foreign Language Olympiad

On April 21, 2025, at 10:00 AM, the Department of Turkology and Language Theory of the Faculty of Philology at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted a Foreign Language Olympiad.

A total of 75 students took part in the event, representing major universities in Almaty: Al-Farabi KazNU, Kazakh National Women's University (ZhenPU), and Suleyman Demirel University (SDU). Participants included 34 students for English copmetition, 18 for French competition,  12 for Chinese competition and  11 for german competition. The Olympiad was open for the  1st,  the 2nd, and  the 3rd-year undergraduate students majoring in foreign languages.

The Olympiad consisted of three stages:

1. Grammar and Vocabulary Test – This stage assessed participants’ theoretical knowledge of the foreign language, including use of grammatical structures and vocabulary.

2. Situational Speaking Task –  The participants’ speaking skills were evaluated, with a focus on communicative ability, fluency, correct pronunciation, and spontaneity.

3. Homework Presentation Defense –  The students presented their projects on the topic:  “Foreign Languages and Artificial Intelligence,” sharing their perspectives on the role of AI in language learning.

At the opening ceremony,  the first-year master's degree  students of "Two Foreign Languages" major  gave a multilingual presentation about the university in English, German, French, and Chinese.

During the Olympiad, a language-themed quiz was held for both participants and the audience, with prizes awarded to the most active participants. A musical performance was also presented.

At the closing ceremony, the chair and members of the jury gave speeches, congratulated the winners, and expressed their gratitude to all participants.

Organizers: lecturers for  the "Two Foreign Languages" major  from the Department of Turkology and Language Theory, the British Centre, as well as the  first-year master’s degree  and PhD  students of the same major.
