On May 16-17, 2025, the Republican Student Research Competition (NIRS) for the “Oriental Studies” educational program was held in Astana at L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University.

This competition plays an important role in developing the research culture of future orientalists, fostering their interest in scientific inquiry, and enhancing the creative potential of students and young researchers.

Talented students from leading universities across the country, studying in the field of Oriental Studies, participated by presenting the results of their research. Only the best candidates, who had previously won top places at the university level and passed rigorous selection, were allowed to compete.

Saken Yermakhan, a 3rd-year student from the Department of Chinese Studies at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and 1st-place winner at the university stage, participated in the competition with his research paper titled “The Issue of Afghanistan in the Foreign Policy of the People's Republic of China.” His work was recognized as highly relevant and thoroughly analyzed, and he was awarded 2nd place.

His academic advisor is Ainur Abdulganiqyzy Turgenbai, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Chinese Studies. The collaborative work between the student and advisor received high praise and positive feedback from the jury.

Participation in this national-level competition was Saken’s first valuable opportunity to gain experience, grow professionally, and deepen his interest in scientific research.

We sincerely congratulate our winner and his academic advisor! We wish them continued creative success and academic achievements!
