KazNU has opened a Center for Artificial Intelligence in Media

The LG AI MediaLab Research Center has been opened at the Faculty of Journalism of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.
"LG AI MediaLab" is the first laboratory in our country using neural networks in the field of media and communications. The scientific center, together with the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Big Data, will conduct comprehensive research, as well as develop various technological solutions using artificial intelligence.
In particular, a project will be created for the press services that will automatically generate text drafts of news materials. The AI assistant will automatically create texts according to the topics of the press services. In addition, social media content will be developed for marketing purposes. The laboratory will be able to use special knowledge bases to verify the accuracy of data in articles and news materials. A student newspaper will also be published using artificial intelligence.
The opening ceremony was attended by Deputy Chairman of the Board of KazNU – First Vice Rector Yerkin Duissenov, President of LG Electronics Almaty Kazakhstan Hak Hyun Kim, Dean of the Faculty of Journalism Kanat Auesbai, teachers and students.
The event was opened by Vice Rector Yerkin Duisenov with a welcoming speech, noting that the scientific center will make a significant contribution to the development of the field of artificial intelligence and the improvement of work in this direction. "As Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has repeatedly noted: "In the context of scientific and technological progress, it is important for us to use all opportunities to strengthen the technological and scientific-innovative sovereignty of the country. In this regard, the development of artificial intelligence opens up broad prospects," Yerkin Duisenov quoted. "The creation of the center is a strategic initiative of the university, forming a new ecosystem of knowledge and practices", the first vice–rector emphasized.
In turn, Hak Hyun Kim, President of LG Electronics Almaty Kazakhstan, noted: "The LG AI MediaLab Research Center is a symbol of the partnership between LG Electronics and Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. I am sure that in the future, students studying at this laboratory will gain a wealth of experience in the field of artificial intelligence and achieve success".
Education at the artificial intelligence laboratory will be implemented in an interdisciplinary direction at the intersection of digital technologies and social sciences. This will make it possible to integrate the best practices of neural networks into the educational process, as well as combine data analysis, visual storytelling and large language models (LLM). The laboratory is equipped with modern LG Ultra Gear monitors, which are convenient for working with high-quality images and visual data.
Last year, as part of an interstate agreement between Kazakhstan and China, the most powerful supercomputer in Central Asia was installed in KazNU. The "LG AI MediaLab" laboratory will be integrated into a common database in order to use the capabilities of the supercomputer.
