ARABIC CALLIGRAPHY MASTERCLASS AT THE FACULTY OF ORIENTAL STUDIES

On October 7, 2025, the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted a masterclass on Arabic calligraphy, organized by the Center for Arabic Studies under the Department of the Near East and South Asia.

The session was conducted by the renowned Kazakh calligrapher, Mr. Orynbasar Asylbek Baiuzakuly, a graduate of the “Nur-Mubarak” University. During the masterclass, the speaker introduced the historical and artistic features of Arabic calligraphy, demonstrated the classical writing styles Naskh and Thuluth, and shared insights into the philosophy of Islamic art and its role in the spiritual culture of the East.

Particular attention was given to the preservation of cultural heritage and the cultivation of students’ aesthetic taste.

The event gathered first-, second-, and third-year students of the “Oriental Studies” and “Translation Studies” programs, who expressed great interest in Arabic calligraphy as a medium of intercultural dialogue and creative expression.

The event was held as part of the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal No. 4 — “Quality Education” and was aimed at fostering intercultural competencies and the spiritual and aesthetic values of youth.
